Procedures for Domain Name Registration and Web Addressing for Non – “.edu” Domain Names

The University of Georgia is generally limited to providing Domain Names that end in “uga.edu”. By following this convention, web addresses can become quite long and unwieldy. Faculty may wish to advertise their web site with extensions such as: “.net”, “.org”, or “.com”.There are various reasons for doing this, but the primary motivation tends to be the improvement of communication through shorter, memorable, convenient and descriptive Web addresses / URLs.It is with this in mind that the following procedures are presented for domain name registration and web addressing.

It is the policy of the Office of Information Technology to provide a procedure for faculty to facilitate the procurement of World Wide Web domains (Web addresses) as requested. It is incumbent upon the faculty to ensure that the appropriate higher level administration (Department Head, Unit Head, etc.) is aware and approves of the pursuit and purpose of the domain.Registration of non-“.edu” domain names may require use of credit cards for purchase.Check with whomever handles your University-related purchasing to determine the best method of payment.

The following procedures assume that you have already registered a fully qualified domain name at your institution through your designated Domain Network Liaison. To search the Domain Network Liaison List for the UGA Campus go to: http://www.uga.edu/netinfo/dnlinfo/
