Viruses are becoming even more of a threat than ever before. With the advent of email borne viruses, it is more important than ever to have updated antivirus software on your computer. While using Pegasus minimizes the spread of email viruses, damage to single computers can still occur where no antivirus software is installed.

**County Extension Offices, Branch Experiment Stations, and any other office included in the Off Campus networking project do not need to purchase anything at this time, and should wait on OIT to contact them.**

Any current antivirus software needs to be uninstalled before install any other antivirus software.

OIT recommends Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) software . NAV is available from UGA Microcomputer Software Distribution (MSD). You will need a CD, license, and upgrade insurance. The most cost-effective strategy is to purchase one CD per office plus a license and upgrade insurance for each computer. At least 10 upgrade insurance licenses must be purchased per order, so it makes sense to purchase for at least 10 computers if possible.

Ordering instructions:
You will need an order form and purchasing information. Both are located on the MSD Web site.

Remember to purchase licenses for all computers that you will install the software on. You only have to purchase 1 set of media.

Tifton Campus

Network Associates VirusScan Security Suite is used for virus protection on the Tifton Campus. Please contact OIT at 386-3594 if you have any questions concerning virus protection.

When ordering new machines it is not necessary to include a Virus protection program. OIT is currently switching all Tifton Campus machines to the new software and will insure that all new machines are included in the new Virus Domain. Management Edition as part of the Suite is Network Associates’ real-time software distribution system, which installs, configures, upgrades, and removes anti-virus software for remote machines on a network. Management Edition helps protect your network from attacks by enabling centralized upgrading of your network’s anti-virus software, as well as centralized alerting of detected attacks. It reduces the time you must spend installing and managing anti-virus software, particularly on large networks, ensuring uninterrupted network security. Management Edition helps you safeguard one of your most important assets—your data—by delivering timely upgrades of VirusScan (for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 3.x) and NetShield for Windows NT. Anti-virus software distribution is an important element in a comprehensive security program that includes a variety of safety measures, such as regular use of encryption and intrusion detection software, backups, meaningful password protection, training, and awareness.
